Dry Fruits in Summer: Which Ones to Eat and Which to Avoid

In Ayurveda and traditional Indian nutrition, foods are classified by their heating or cooling properties. Dry fruits are generally considered warming foods — but that doesn't mean you should avoid them in summer. You just need to know which ones are safe and how to eat them right.

Why This Matters in Indian Summer

The extreme heat in Indian summers (especially May–July) means the body is already under thermal stress. Eating too many heating foods can cause excessive sweating, acne, and digestive issues. Being selective about which dry fruits you eat makes a big difference.

Best Dry Fruits for Summer

1. Raisins — Cooling and Alkalising

Soaked raisins are excellent in summer. They have a cooling effect and are alkalising, which helps balance the body's pH. Soak a tablespoon of raisins overnight and drink the water + eat the raisins in the morning. This is one of Ayurveda's oldest summer remedies.

2. Dried Apricots — Hydrating and Light

Dried apricots are light and easy to digest. They help replenish potassium lost through sweating and are rich in Vitamin A. Their sweet-tangy flavour is refreshing and perfect for summer snacking.

3. Prunes — Digestive Support

Summer heat can disrupt digestion. Prunes keep the digestive system regular and prevent constipation that often worsens in hot weather.

4. Almonds — Soaked Only

Raw dry almonds are heating. But soaked and peeled almonds are much gentler. Always soak almonds overnight before eating them in summer.

Dry Fruits to Limit in Summer

Walnuts

Walnuts generate significant heat. Limit to 2 walnut halves per day in peak summer, ideally with yoghurt to balance.

Cashews

Cashews are moderately heating. Keep to 6–8 per day in summer and avoid eating on an empty stomach.

The Summer Rule

Soak before you eat. Soaking any dry fruit in water overnight reduces its heating properties significantly. Water leaches out the compounds that generate heat, making almost all dry fruits summer-friendly when soaked.
